現代日本では、かしこい若者ほど「問題に気付いているけれど何もできない自分」に自己矛盾を感じる。強烈な認知的不協和を抱えることになる。

そんな若者が、デモという「行動を起こした人」を見た。「俺は誰よりも問題意識が高いのに行動ができない」にもかかわらず「俺よりも問題意識の低そうな人たちが行動を起こした」

もしもこの若者が、自らの知見を活かしてデモを応援すれば、認知的不協和は解消される。が、デモを肯定してしまうと「いままで何もしなかった自分」を否定することになる。自己否定は誰だってイヤだ。だから批判の矛先を「すでに行動を起こした人」に向ける――デモの参加者を批判し、反デモを主張する。

まして世界は「分かりやすいヒーローと悪役の時代」を終えて、「名も無き個々の時代」になろうとしている。名も無き凡人たちであっても、ただ集まるだけでチカラを持つ：世界はそれを証明した。「なのに、なんで自分は行動をしなかったのだろう……」賢い若者たちの認知的不協和は膨らむばかりだ。

芸能人の義援金を「偽善だ！」と笑い、被災地へのボランティアを「どうせ異性が目的だろ」と貶める。これらもみんな認知的不協和の産物である。
